The budgerigar is a small Bird. This bird is a long-tailed, seed-eating parrot usually nicknamed the budgie or in American English. The parakeet Budgies are the only species in the genus Melopsittacus. Naturally, the species is green and yellow with black, scalloped markings on the nape, back, and wings. Here are the Top 9 Interesting Facts about Budgie.

1st Fact: 3000 feathers

Budgies can have up to 3000 feathers across their entire bodies. Let’s give a moment of appreciation to the person whose job was to count all of them. 

2nd fact: Sexually 

If you pet your budgies back you’re actually turning it on sexually when budgies mate they’re used to standing on the back of one another and this reminds them of the act of petting them on their backs can sexually frustrate them. So it’s better to pet them around their head, legs and belly if they’ll let you. 

3rd fact: Eat Cannabis Seeds & Plants

You know that a few years ago in the UK budgies were responsible for the growth of fields over fields of cannabis. budgies can actually eat cannabis seeds and that’s how it was spread to those who wander so they cannot get high off of it. 

4th fact: Extracting Oil

Have you ever seen your budgie doing this? They always do this when they clean themselves and they’re actually extracting oil from the spot on their backs using their beaks. They cover their feathers with it to become water-resistant and to stay in shape of course. 

5th fact: Live up to 5 to 10 years

Budgies can live up to 15 years. If they are being treated very well. But the average budgie would usually live up to 5 to 10 years in captivity. However, the oldest budgie ever recorded reached 29 years his name was Charlie. 

6th fact:  Cloaca

Unlike mammals, male budgies don’t have penises. Instead, both male and female budgies have what’s known as a clue. It’s just an internal organ that ends in an opening that functions for both matings and pooping for female budgies. 

7th fact: Drink 1 teaspoon of water a day

Budgies drink only one teaspoon of water a day. which is roughly five meals. So that’s why catching your budgie drinking is almost impossible. 

8th fact: Cannot hold food or toys with leg

Budgies are amongst the only parrots who cannot hold food or toys with their legs while standing on the other unlike a cockatoo or an African grey. It’s known that veggies are fragile animals. 

9th fact: Die  for 10 drops of blood

You know that they can die if they lose more than 10 drops of blood. If it happens that your budgie starts to bleed it’s important to act fast.
